Frackers need to pay for WV roads they damage

To: WV Legislature; From: Steve Conlon (Wetzel County, WV)

Subject: Rebuilding gas industry impacted roads

...
"It has now been 8 years since gas industry activity started here. Certainly we’ve “seen it all here”. Roads have been destroyed, widened, rebuilt. Sharp curves have been removed. Some homes have been removed."

...

"Obviously, the State is not charging the gas companies the correct amount for using our roads. HB2080 gets us the money, but it takes it out of our own pocket. ..."

...

"We need to very calmly have the nerve to charge the gas industry companies for their road impacts. And, I am willing to pay more for my vehicular impact. Now is the time. Bury HB 2080. Let’s try a different angle."

Corporations didn't succeed on their own, they used our roads and bridges, grids, educational services, etc., etc., etc. It doesn't sound as though any "payback" they have made in repairs to the roads has been for the benefit of the "neighborhood" but to benefit them...curves removed, for one.

My area is going to have a similar situation with a monstrous new plant going up. There are signs everywhere to beware of trucks entering the highway. Who's going to argue with a truck? They have totally changed the environment and landscape...even got tax advantages to do so.

Instead of making frackers pay f/ road upkeep, he raised gas tax, PennDOT & other fees. A lot of fracking trucks aren't lic in PA so only gas tax affected them.

It's also why Walmart had to sue to get stores in all 50 states. (Think it was Vermont that didn't want 'big box' stores & plazas.)On claims of jobs, improved economy they get tax breaks from local govt who then has to upgrade sewers, roads, etc. Oh, and tap in to social, network funds because of store's low wages.

BTW, agree completely on your proper interpretation of 'you didn't build that.'
