In Iowa, Walker defends position on China

MISSOURI VALLEY, Ia. —..........

"Trade will continue because both countries are interdependent on each other," he told reporters outside of Cronk's Cafe in Denison.

Chinese President Xi Jinping is set to visit the United States next month. In the face of falling international financial markets, Walker on Monday called on President Barack Obama to rescind that offer.

He doubled down on that as he made a series of campaign stops in Iowa on Wednesday — a state that exported nearly $1 billion worth of products to China in 2014

"It won’t have an impact on Iowa. It won’t have an impact on Wisconsin," Walker said. "But it will have an impact in terms of us sending a signal that we expect that the Chinese government should no longer be involved in cyber-attacks against the government of the United States, against the people of the United States and against the businesses of the United States."

GREENFIELD, Ia.– When Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker arrived at The Corner Coffee Shop in Greenfield, he made a full circuit of the room – stopping to talk and answer questions with every voter – before giving a condensed version of his standard stump speech and taking audience questions.

In Greenfield and in every other stop on his two-day swing through Iowa, Walker spent less time on the stump than usual and more time talking one on one with voters.

His speech itself also included a small change meant to tap into the frustration Republican voters have voiced – frustration that has given rise to anti-establishment candidates like businessman Donald Trump, retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson and former Hewlett-

“Sometimes the national media looks at some of the concerns out there and they think it’s about anger,” he said in his speech. “To me, anger’s something that makes you upset and makes you walk away from everything. What I see is not about anger. I see people who are upset, for sure. I’m upset with Washington. But I see, more than anger, I see urgency. I see an urgency in America that says not just for me, but for my children, for our grandchildren, we’ve got to do something here. We’ve got to take charge of this country again.”

The changes to his style, though subtle, come at a time when Walker is down in the polls and is seeking to re-energize his campaign following a lackluster performance in the first Republican presidential debate.

He said he’s hoping his message of urgency – paired with his on-the-ground retail approach – will resonate with voters.

Iowans at each stop on this most recent tour consistently said they are not ready to commit to caucusing for the governor, but said they include him among their top tier of candidates along with Fiorina, Carson and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz...

Scott Walker says he didn't chastise Chinese president in 2013 meeting

Greenfield, Iowa — As he continued to call for President Barack Obama to cancel a state visit for China's president, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker acknowledged Thursday that he had not challenged the communist country's leader when he met with him in 2013.

"Those are things governors should not be involved in," the White House hopeful told reporters at a stop in Greenfield, southwest of Des Moines. "When (Wisconsin state officials) do trips other places, we don't talk about foreign policy. Those are the proper role of the federal government, the president, the State Department and others there. When we go abroad, we talk about trade-specific things."

Walker in 2013 participated in a trade mission to China and while there he and Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad met with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Walker has bragged about being one of the first elected U.S. officials to meet with the leader, whom Branstad has known for years.

Asked whether he challenged Xi about economic manipulation or other issues while there, Walker said: "No, I did not, because as Governor Branstad has said this week, that's not the role of a governor. Governors are not there to do foreign policy."......................

Scott Walker's weaknesses, challenges show as GOP race heats up

By Craig Gilbert of the Journal Sentinel

We’ve known for a long time what assets Scott Walker brings to the Republican race for president: youth, conservative record, swing-state political success and heroic (to his party) recall victory over Democrats and labor.

But this summer we’re getting a much better sense of his soft spots, weaknesses and political challenges, thanks to the rise of Donald Trump and the crucible of a national campaign.

Here is a look at three of them:

Personality.
“Aggressively normal” was how Walker billed himself in his closing statement at the first GOP debate Aug. 6. But his debate performance was so aggressively normal it barely registered. In post-debate polls of GOP voters, hardly anyone thought Walker had the best debate and hardly anyone thought he had the worst debate. He didn’t make an impression, which was a bad outcome in a giant field where every day is a war for attention. The fiery speech he gave in Iowa last January was Walker’s answer to those who said he was too bland to get GOP primary voters excited. But the Cleveland debate and the suffocating effects of Trump’s outrageous personality have revived those doubts.

Walker’s imperturbability has been a strength in the past and may prove to be so again in the fight for his party’s nomination. But it comes with a kind of flatness. Walker is avidly trying to signal to rambunctious Republican voters he, too, shares their anger and urgency and frustration, but his emotions are so contained he has trouble communicating it................................
