Harsdorf, Tiffany

Senators boost campaign accounts amid costly voucher expansion
MADISON
Recent news that Wisconsins private school voucher program will cost
state taxpayers more than $1 billion over six years has prompted a ren
ewed look at
special interest relati
onships with
key Republican Senators. In particular, questions
have been raised regarding the impact of campaign contributions to three Republicans
on the powerful Joint Finance Committee (JFC) and whether those donation
s helped to
drive
support for the
costly voucher school expansion.
According to campaign finance filings, Senators Sheila Harsdorf (R
-
River Falls), Tom
Tiffany (R
-
Hazelhurst) and Luther Olson (R
-
Ripon)
have received thousands in
contributions from the private school voucher industry. The
se three JFC senators all
voted to expand Gov. Walkers unaccountable voucher school program and divert
millions in state taxpayer funding from public schools to private voucher groups.
It doesnt take a rocket scientist to follow the money trail left b
ehind by these Senators
and their s
pecial interest friends
, said SSDC Executive Director Matt Ullsvik.
Faced
w
ith the option of restoring
budget cuts to public schools or diverting more
taxpayer dollars to Gov. Walkers unaccountable voucher program, the
se
senators listened to their wealthy campaign contributors and turned their backs
on Wisconsins children.
The donations from voucher industry special interests to Sen. Harsdorf ($14,550), Sen.
Tiffany ($20,200) and Sen. Olsen ($14,550) have been exten
sively documented by the
non partisan One Wisconsin Now watchdog organization. Both One Wisconsin Now and
the non -partisan Wisconsin Democracy Campaign estimate that pro-voucher school
special interests have spent over $4 mil
lion in recent years on
electio
neering activities
to support Republican legislative candidates.
