Wisconsin DNR may buy land once eyed for nuclear plant on Chippewa River

A sprawling river bottom in western Wisconsin that was the site of a contentious plan for a nuclear power plant could soon be owned by the state.

The Natural Resources Board will be asked to approve the purchase of 990 acres along the Lower Chippewa River in Dunn County, southwest of Eau Claire, at its meeting on Aug. 3 in Ashland.

The Department of Natural Resources would pay $2,080,155 for the property, which is owned by Xcel Energy, the Minneapolis-based utility that has a large service area in the region.

The property includes a portion of the Chippewa River trail and 18,000 feet of shoreline on the south side of the river.
