Ex-Senator Feingold launches new issue group

Former US Sen. Russ Feingold says he is launching a new group that will advocate for voting rights, redistricting reform, campaign finance laws and the abolition of the Electoral College, among other things.

In an interview, Feingold said the common thread in these issues is shoring up a political process that he says is losing legitimacy in the eyes of many voters.

For example, the Wisconsin Democrat cited the election in recent years of two presidents who lost the popular vote (George W. Bush in 2000 and Donald Trump in 2016), saying the Electoral College is eroding public confidence in democracy and should be scrapped.

Feingold said partisan gerrymandering, voting restrictions and deregulation of campaign fundraising and spending were also distorting elections and “having a devastating impact on people’s faith in our government.“

Is that all those things are ONLY TRUE ... when (insert the party that is not 'yours' ... here) wins elections. And that's just to the TINY % of people who understand every one of them.

IOW, way too few people have a solid grasp of these problems and their ramifications. It's all way to hazy and technical.

I'd bet that while at LEAST 80% of DU'ers could quickly and correctly answer the question "name the two times in the last 5 POTUS elections when the loser of the Popular Vote ... became the President of the USA" ... if you asked that of the General Population ... it'd be more like 20% of Americans AT BEST that could tell you that off the top of their head. And that's probably what it'd be if you refreshed their memory by saying 'GWB, 2000, GWB, 2004, BHO 2008, BHO 2012, DJT 2016 ... are your choices'.

If you didn't spell out those options, it'd be even lower, especially if the Election Year were a required part of the answer.

People pay so pathetically little attention that a 'movement' like Russ's, laudable as it is ... is probably never going to gain any real 'traction'. Way too few people understand the nexus of all these different issues destroying our democracy. You mention 'redistricting' to the average person, they'll think your trying to move their kid to a different school.

And NO MORE than 20% of Americans could remotely accurately describe the meaning of the word 'gerrymandering', I guarantee it.

And their eyes would instantly glaze over if you spoke the words 'campaign finance laws' at them ... probably 40% of Americans would't even UNDERSTAND what those 3 words mean, when spoken in succession. I'm not even kidding.

And don't even get me started on the meaning of the two words 'Electoral College' ... lol ... it's probably even worse ...
