Former Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald, R-Juneau, has a talent for putting the reaction back in reactionary. He says things that are so shocking it is easy to think he has misspoken.
But Fitzgerald is not misspeaking. Hes just showing his true colors.
While other Wisconsin Republicans tried to cloak the fact that Gov. Scott Walker was attacking labor rights in order to undermine the ability of unions and their members to have a voice in our politics, he came right out and said it.
If we win this battle, and the money is not there under the auspices of the unions, certainly what youre going to find is President Obama is going to have a much difficult, much more difficult, time getting elected and winning the state of Wisconsin, he told Fox News last year.
Fitzgeralds take-no-prisoners approach to politics, as well as his disregard for legislative rules and open meetings laws, inspired the recall challenge he now faces from newcomer Lori Compas. In the May 8 primary, Compas ran the best of the four Democrats who have mounted serious challenges to Republican senators. Despite Fitzgeralds encouragement of Republicans to cross over and back a fake Democrat challenger, Compas scored a striking 72 percent of the vote.
