'Even if you didn't know her, that's a human'

PORTAGE, Wis. — A Portage family’s 4th of July plans are shattered. Instead of spending the weekend with their daughter and sister Ashley Slama, they’re planning her funeral.

The driver who deputies believe is responsible for her death is now in jail, but her family wants to see justice served.

“We are going to fight to the end to make sure that he understands what he’s done, what he has taken away from this family,” said Treyton Schommer, Slama’s brother. “My sister will get justice for his stupidity and his actions.”

The Sauk County Sheriff’s Department said early Saturday morning a deputy pulled over a car for a traffic violation on CTH T in the Township of Delton. Slama was one of the two passengers in that car. But when the deputy walked up to the car, the driver took off.

A guy was busted on DUI #6, 53 years old and no license, no insurance.

The guy who barely missed clobbering me on my bicycle had two previous DUI's, no license, no insurance.

states neither one checked up or enforced their law until after an accident. Here in New Mexico
if you don't supply proof of insurance when registering your vehicle you lose the right to drive
that vehicle. It's better here.

I join the family in mourning for their daughter.

Once per year you must get a car inspection by a licensed repair shop.

In December all cars are required to pay a registration fee that includes liability insurance, and a tax dependent on the value of your car.

Also bars close at 11 and during Covid we all have to be off the roads by 10 pm and not allowed on until 5:30 am.
Work and emergency vehicles excluded.

Finally, occasionally there are check stops by police or transit police checking your documents and if not a resident your passport and insurance coverage required since Covid.

but always heard there were a lot of Repug expats there. Apparently not so? Also husband does not speak Spanish. I don't speak it well but could pick it up quickly enough from what's left in my brain.

Since his loss they are quiet.

We have Spanish lessons and Mr Lake has tossed his hat in and is learning as much as I.

Depending on where you live you can get by with Spanglish if you are resistant to Spanish.

Living here is much different than a vacation here.

There are so many unique places to choose to live. We live in a rain forest. If you hate rain don’t move here. The coast Gulf and Pacific are different. Warmer and tropical.

Ants are our bane of existence here. But there are also the gigantic bugs that we think are cool but many hate.

But we’ve seen sooooo many cool things.

Us seems like the third world country.
We have had both shots for a couple months now. No mask holes. Not many shitty people. (Expats)

We love it all told. There is now way we would move back.

Everyone atDU is welcome to contact us if you ever plan a trip here. Love ya’ll
