The lake used to freeze over for about 4 months, but last year it was 77 days.

1. I remember taking monthly water and sediment samples during 1973-1974 for my MS thesis

During the winter months I walked out onto the middle of University Bay (hauling my sledge with various instruments) and had to use a human powered ice auger (I was the human power) to drill through 2-3 ft (60-90 cm) of ice to be able to collect my water and sediment samples and get temperature and oxygen profiles of the water column. My research was to examine the ecology of methanogenic microbes (archaea). I was able to isolate a methanogen (Methanosarcina) from the sediment, which I used in studies of its metabolism.

The data provided above in the post clearly indicate that after 1978, the duration of ice diminished and continues to diminish. More evidence that global warming is real. Thanks for posting.

3. I love tech talk!

I was born in Greenfield. So was Alan Kulwicki.
The school system seemed to think one needed
algebra and geometry in order to advance in the sciences.
A's in German and D's in English. A's in science but F's in Algebra. Go figure.
I was looking at water ecology, but the school held me back so I quit.
I joined the Marines and worked in Avionics. WITH NO MATH!
Now retired after a career in electronics.
Your post is my possible life.

4. Wow!

I was really little then, but would sit with my dad watching the news. Remember the talk then about us ruining the earth. And, we see that is correct. Cannot believe how warm it is here. Even 15 years ago we had 108” of snow over that winter. So far this year: a dusting of ice and flecks of snow. So sad.
