Senate Unanimously Passes Plan to Close Troubled Youth Prison, but Vos Will Spike It

Assembly Speaker Robin Vos (R-Rochester) plans to kill a bill to finally close Wisconsin’s Lincoln Hills youth prison that has for years been a source of concern due to issues with sexual assault and staff abuse of young inmates.

Lawmakers voted about four years ago to close the prison north of Merrill but have never actually provided funding for a new facility to replace it. According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Vos told reporters Tuesday that he’ll oppose a bill that would finally put money behind the closure of Lincoln Hills, even though it recently passed the state Senate with unanimous support from lawmakers of both parties.

Sen. Mary Felzkowski (R-Irma), whose district includes Lincoln Hills, tweeted that she wants to see the bill passed in order to protect inmates and staff, saying sexual misconduct, youth and staff battery, and injury to staff spiked sharply in 2020. “Staff cannot continue in these conditions. And they certainly can’t help the children in their care in these conditions,” Felzkowski wrote.

Vos claimed Gov. Tony Evers, who has long supported closing Lincoln Hills and building a replacement, is at fault, according to the Journal Sentinel. An Evers spokesperson said Vos is the one "singlehandedly obstructing bipartisan legislation."
