WASHINGTON Wisconsins top Democrats have scrutinized the postmaster general over mail delays across the state, but officials say those concerns dont extend to absentee ballots in the upcoming election.
Democratic Rep. Mark Pocan last week accused U.S. Postmaster General Louis DeJoy of blowing up the mail delivery process in Wisconsin, which has experienced some of the worst mail delays in the country.
The Madison Democrat, who has long been critical of DeJoy, suggested that a Postal Service pilot program consolidating mail processing in the Green Bay area has contributed to the decline in mail delivery rates in Wisconsin. The battleground state has the second worst mail delivery times in the country, according to a Postal Service service performance report for the third quarter of 2024.
Still, Pocan told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel he isnt worried the delays will impact those who choose to vote by mail before the Nov. 5 election, noting the Postal Service treats postmarked absentee ballots differently than regular mail closer to Election Day and sometimes increases delivery as elections approach.
