Australia marks 80 years since Japanese bombings

Australia has marked the 80th anniversary of air strikes on the city of Darwin by the now-defunct Imperial Japanese military during World War Two.

About 4,000 people attended a memorial ceremony in the northern city on Saturday. They included Prime Minister Scott Morrison and government officials.

The bombings on February 19, 1942 killed more than 250 people, including civilians. Darwin was a key port for the Allied Forces at the time.

Air raid sirens blared to mark the exact time the attack began. Australian troops re-enacted the firing of anti-aircraft artillery.
