Two-thirds of Albertans would vote to stay in Canada or lean that way, new poll suggests

Petition signings and packed town halls haven't swayed a vast majority of Albertans toward separating from Canada, new data suggests.

A poll released Monday by the Angus Reid Institute found that 65 per cent of the 979 Albertans surveyed say they would either vote to stay in Canada or lean toward voting that way if a referendum on Alberta separation were held today, while 29 per cent say they would vote or lean toward voting to leave.

Of the two-thirds who say they want to remain in Canada, 57 per cent said they would definitely vote to stay, while eight per cent say they would lean toward voting to stay.

Meanwhile, eight per cent of those in favour of separation would definitely vote to leave, while 21 per cent would lean toward vote to leave.

Of the respondents who identified as UCP voters, 41 per cent lean toward leaving, while 16 per cent say they would definitely vote to leave Canada.

Meanwhile, 26 per cent of those who identify as UCP voters say they would definitely vote to stay.

The percentages have remained consistent for the last year and even longer. The reality is only around 20% of Albertans are firm on voting to separate.

Even with US money flooding the campaign, the referendum will lose.

Even if it passed, it is non binding, and separation could not occur without the consent of both the federal government and the First Nations people who live in Alberta.

Hopefully it will mean the end of Smith’s political career.

the numbers have stayed the same as well. I want Smith gone so bad, she is despicable but, sadly, I don't see it happening yet, I would be very happy to be wrong for sure.

petition. Canada forever petition was signed by 456,000 in 3 mos, and turned in to Elections Alberta and it should be the one that is voted on if there is a referendum, not this other one that was given 6 mos to collect 177,000 signatures. Not sure they will even succeed in getting that many. It has been pretty clear to us in Alberta that this was never going to go. I suspect there will not be a referendum at all, after these numbers.
77% said they would leave the province of Alberta if they separated with 74% to other provinces and 3% leave Canada altogether. Only 8% said for sure they would vote to leave and the remaining was maybe.
