On April 8th, 2007, six members of the Canadian Armed Forces were killed while serving in Afghanistan.

Private Kevin Kennedy, aged 20, Private David Greenslade, aged 20, Corporal Brent Poland, aged 37, Corporal Aaron Williams, aged 23, and Sergeant Donald Lucas, aged 31, members of the 2nd Battalion, Royal Canadian Regiment, based at CFB Gagetown, New Brunswick, and Master Corporal Christopher Stannix, aged 24, a reservist with the Halifax-based Princess Louise Fusiliers, were killed when the light armoured vehicle they were travelling in struck an improvised explosive device during a coalition convoy in the Maywand district, around 75 kilometres west of Kandahar City. Four other soldiers were also injured in the blast.

This was the single worst day of violence against Canadian troops in combat since 26 members of the same Royal Canadian Regiment were killed in Korea in 1953.
