Media conglomerate Rogers Communications has launched a shot across the bow of the broadcasting landscape in a $5.2-billion deal for the right to broadcast NHL games across Canada for the next 12 years.
The deal, announced Tuesday, goes from 2014 to mid-2026, and is groundbreaking in its scope. It's the first time a major North American sport has sold exclusive national broadcast rights to a single entity, Rogers Media president Keith Pelley noted at a press conference Tuesday morning.
Rogers will make an up-front payment of $150 million, and then annual payments starting at $300 million, which will escalate to $500 million in the final year of the deal. According to CRTC data, TSN and RDS only took in a combined total of $541 million in revenue last year.
'While this looks like a big loss for Bell Media, it never had these national broadcasts which were historically owned by the CBC. We would expect Rogers to sell some of these games to Bell to help monetize the fees paid to the NHL.'
- Dvai Ghose, Canaccord telecom analyst The deal is more than two times the value of the $2 billion that U.S. broadcaster NBC agreed to pay the NHL for 10 years, starting in 2011.

As an owner of the CBC I want to see the shedding of all costs associated with the HNIC system. Marketing, planning, scheduling, programming and on and on. From Don Cherry to his side kick. If there is no income from the program then it is just a mirror on what others produce. Camera people to everything. It has to land in Rogers lap. ASAP.

Is a crown corporation, much like the post office. Thus all Canadians are owners.

(3,286 posts)Is a fact! The CBC is a Crown Corporation!

(3,286 posts)Crown corporations should serve the public interest. I assume that is why governments take control of the service. I personally don't think the CBC, at least locally, is serving the public interest. Not just for the HNIC as you suggested in the OP but for other issues that some doofus in Toronto thinks we should all fall in line with.
I was a long time CBC Radio fan growing up with a man crush on Peter Gzowski, Michael Enright and even Don Harron. After Barbara Frum, As it Happens lost its edge. The Morning show devolved into regional programs that again, some out of town producer, thought should interest us. They beat a story to death. There was no end to the Robert Latimer story....
If I'm on the road, I'll tune in CBC News on the radio. They used to have a great national early morning lite classical show. Tom Allen was the host and once a week he would interview a pop culture reporter named ___ Cummings. It was the best thing ever on CBC and they canceled it; replaced it with 'can-con' or more precisely, their musician friends. Philosophically I support Canadian Content and have musician friends who would benefit from national exposure, but don't get it because they don't live east of Thunder Bay.
Now that I'm retired I get my morning news dump from the TV. But I bounce around the channels and CBC gets a look along with CNN, MSNBC, TSN and Sportsnet(RDS?). None of them are good enough to retain my interest for long. At 5AM there is nobody to complain about my channel surfing....
A last word about CC's out here in the heartland where we were the first to make the medical industry a crown corporation. Our telecommunications company was established and protected until the neocons came along. Now we have every comm' company in NA hustling for our dollar and Sasktel is being eviscerated. The once proud and publicly owned infrastructure of highway construction and maintenance is now controlled by private companies that truly have a completely different objective than serving the public interest.

I didn't say HNIC was anything.
I don't believe the government took over the CBC. I believe that they gave birth to it.
CBC radio has been and is being starved to death. If you/we don't want CBC radio, then we won't have it.
And I believe that the Robert Latimer story played right into the Reform plan (and was egged on by Reform).
CBC radio is trying to survive the Conservatives. Doesn't take a retired intellect to conclude that.
I share your ideas and feelings about what we are being subjected to. It can pretty much be described by Shoot the Hippo. Or more recently by The Shock Doctrine.
