Leaked emails reveal Nigel Farage's long-standing links to Julian Assange

LONDON — There was much confusion Thursday when Nigel Farage was spotted by BuzzFeed leaving the Ecuadorian Embassy in London — the residence of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.

Asked why he was there, Farage replied that he couldn't remember what he was doing in the building, adding, "I never discuss where I go or who I see."

Emails leaked to Business Insider, however, reveal that UKIP under Farage's leadership had long-standing links to Assange.

The links involve long-term vigorous lobbying in the European Parliament against the European Arrest Warrant - not just in Assange's long-running Swedish case, but in principle - and goodness knows what else, given the secretive and amnesiac nature of Farage's visit to the Ecuadorian Embassy.

You just have to look at a lot of the figures behind the scenes linking the two of them.

The UK politician who has been the most vocal in his defense of Assange is George Galloway. I can even remember them trying to make a big issue of the Julian Assange case at the Rotherham by-election in 2012. The Assange case has lead Galloway to making misogynist statements about rape that you would expect from the very worst people in the GOP.

but his comments during the Rotherham by-election were absolutely gobsmacking. Though his own track record on attitudes and conduct towards women has been revolting since he first appeared on the scene.

...when I was protesting against the Iraq war that although Galloway was a very high profile and active opponent of the war he was disliked by a large number of anti-war activists as they felt that his closeness to Saddam Hussein did more harm than good to the anti-war argument. It allowed proponents of the Iraq war such as David Aaronovitch to portray the opponents of the Iraq war as being pro-Saddam, which was anything but the case for the overwhelming majority of us.

In recent times Galloway has made the journey from being far left to being more on the far right of the political spectrum. The main constant has been a tendency to fawn over people like Bashar al-Assad and Vladimir Putin.

Given his previous support for Corbyn and that Galloway has deregistered "Respect" as a political party I would have to conclude that it is monumentally hypocritical for George Galloway to be standing against Corbyn's Labour in a seat like Manchester Gorton. #

I cheered, like everybody else with a brain who was to the left of Attila the Hun when he decimated that Congressional committee all those years ago. That was his high point. It's been all downhill since then.
