Appeal for calm after Belfast street violence

RTÉ
Updated / Saturday, 3 Apr 2021 11:52

Politicians and police in Northern Ireland have appealed for calm following street violence in Belfast last night. Eight police officers were injured in rioting in a loyalist area of the city. Officers were targeted in the Sandy Row area by a crowd of mostly young people throwing bottles, bricks and fireworks.

... The trouble came after four successive nights of disturbances in the unionist Waterside area of Derry. The disorder has flared amid ongoing tensions within loyalism across Northern Ireland.

Loyalists and unionists are angry about post-Brexit trading arrangements which they claim have created barriers between Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK.

Tensions were ramped up further this week following a decision not to prosecute 24 Sinn Féin politicians for attending the funeral of republican, Bobby Storey, during Covid-19 restrictions last summer.
