David Amess's death, an assault on democracy

Also Tory reaction to his murder equals a potential further assault on democracy.

“Modern tyranny is terror management. When the terrorist attack comes, remember that authoritarians exploit such events in order to consolidate power. The sudden disaster that requires the end of checks and balances, the dissolution of opposition parties, the suspension of freedom of expression, the right to a fair trial, and so on, is the oldest trick in the Hitlerian book. Do not fall for it.”
― Timothy Snyder,

The Home Secretary on the Sunday Shows talking about further ways to limit our freedoms because of this awful incident. Because of cause she is.

Terrible for the victim and his family. Terrible for democracy, not just because of how the likes of Patel may use it, but because MPs are likely to fear doing their constituency duties, and because people will be deterred from becoming MPs in the first place. I have heard that Kim Leadbeater, the sister and current successor of Jo Cox, the previous MP to be assassinated, has come under pressure from her partner to resign for her own safety.
