'No major' economic benefits to Brexit so far, former Brexit secretary says - Times Radio

“It will provide significant benefits, it’s going to take a bit longer than I thought.”

There have been “no major” economic benefits to Brexit so far, former Brexit secretary David Davis tells #TimesRadio. He also tells Matt Chorley that increasing immigration is not the answer to economic growth.

Just around the corner; two weeks ahead.

Until then, rations will be reduced and the beatings will continue.

May landed us with when many public promises were made from the Leave side that a vote for Brexit don't mean withdrawal from the Customs Union or even the end of freedom of movement.

Some of that was down to the horrible mess in parliament when the terms of withdrawal were being debated. The confusion and uncertainty there mirrored that among the general population. It's probably one of the few times in some decades when parliament has truly reflected the body of public opinion!

Opinion polling has shown a consistent significant shift in the public sentiment regarding Brexit. The shame - and I do mean shame - of it is that the major opposition party has nothing to offer this debate other than "do Brexit better" while shying away from observing one of the crucial EU four freedoms that might open the door to finding a better relationship with the EU that benefited them and would certainly help the UK get through the current and coming storms - freedom of movement of people. That doesn't mean untrammelled immigration - it never has, and that was one of Brexit's grand lies.

It feels like if any party is going to roll back Brexit at the moment, it'll be the Tories, in the face of unavoidable economic logic and desperation.

Labour faces an open goal, and doesn't seem to want to even look at the ball, let alone try to kick it in the general direction of the goal line.

there are many countries that have had economic sanctions imposed on them, but we may be the only country to vote to impose economic sanctions on itself.
