Folk singer Roy Harper charged with child sex offences

Folk singer Roy Harper has been charged with sexually abusing a girl from the age of 12.

The 72-year-old is due before Hereford Magistrates' Court on Monday accused of nine counts of sexual assault.

West Mercia Police said the offences are alleged to have been committed in Herefordshire between 1975 and 1977 and relate to one victim.

The folk-rock musician Roy Harper could face a retrial on five charges of historical sexual abuse after a jury failed to reach verdicts.

Harper, who has worked with artists ranging from Paul McCartney to Kate Bush, was acquitted of two counts of indecent assault on Friday.

Harper was found not guilty of one count of indecently assaulting an 11-year-old in the mid-1970s in Worcestershire and was also cleared of a charge of indecently assaulting a 16-year-old girl in Hereford in 1980. The outstanding charges all relate to the 11-year-old.

Prosecutors have two weeks to consider whether to seek a retrial.

It's been more than 2 weeks, and I can't find any news of a retrial, so I suspect they are not seeking one, but that's not definite.
