before now.
The LibDems as a group are not known for long-term loyalty to their leaders; and apart from more principled reasons for objecting to Clegg's poodling to the Tories, it was bringing them down drastically in the polls.
ETA: one of the few things that I do know about Bruce is that he had announced his retirement from parliament for 2015, so I doubt that he's playing a huge role in anything any more, insofar as he ever did.

I've had a look at Malcolm Bruce's Wikipedia page earlier. Has he only been deputy leader since January? And isn't he due to stand down at the next election?
