RAF jets could be bombing jihadis by the weekend Cameron to sign off on military action against ISIS

David Cameron will today finally sign off air strikes on Islamic State fanatics in northern Iraq.

The Prime Minister will offer the services of the RAF during talks in New York with his Iraqi counterpart Haider al-Abadi.

If the offer is accepted, MPs will be recalled for an emergency session of Parliament within the next 72 hours to approve the action. British Tornado bombers could be in action by the weekend.

Interviewed on NBC News, Mr Cameron said the IS group posed a direct threat to Britain.

There's not much that the RAF/RN can do that the US military muscle has done. Sure a few Tomahawks from a T-Boat SSN and Storm Shadows would add to the usual "UK-US Special relationship during military ops". Maybe some Paveways and Brimstones but the US alone can do the job. Plus, there's the issue of basing. RAF Akrotiri may be British, but the Cyprus government needs to give its own green-light if it is used (though of course US of A will glad provide alternative bases for the Tornados).

And on a political/social point of view, with the location of the British aid worker held by IS/ISIL/ISIS unknown, military attacks may lead to another unfortunate and cruel b****.... (I don't want to type it out).

But then, I'm sure someone in the civil service/Cabinet would have thought about this as well...

The UK Parliament has backed British participation in air strikes against Islamic State extremists in Iraq.

After a seven-hour debate, MPs voted for military action by 524 votes to 43.

The Conservatives, Lib Dems and Labour leaderships all backed air strikes although some MPs expressed concerns about where it would lead and the prospect of future engagement in Syria.
