Related: About this forumHillsborough inquests: Fans unlawfully killed, jury concludes
At long last.
Ninety-six football fans who died as a result of a crush in the 1989 Hillsborough disaster were unlawfully killed, the inquests have concluded.
The jury found match commander Ch Supt David Duckenfield was "responsible for manslaughter by gross negligence" due to a breach of his duty of care.
Police errors also added to a dangerous situation at the FA Cup semi-final.
The prime minister said the inquests had provided "official confirmation" fans were "utterly blameless".
After a 27-year campaign by victims' families, the behaviour of Liverpool fans was exonerated.
The jury found they did not contribute to the danger unfolding at the turnstiles at the Leppings Lane end of Sheffield Wednesday's ground on 15 April 1989.

A mutiny by the sports desk and an overwhelmingly negative reaction on social media prompted the Times to change its front page on Tuesday night to include the verdict of the inquest into the Hillsborough stadium disaster.
The Hillsborough verdict was not on the front page of the first edition, but a picture of a man shovelling snow was replaced with an image of relatives of the families of the 96 who died. The masthead was changed to highlight coverage inside the newspaper under the heading: Hillsborough: an end at last to the smears and lies.
Such was the strength of internal and external feeling that the Times, along with its News Corp stablemate the Sun, had ignored the story that 96 people were unlawfully killed that it put out a statement confessing to a cock-up rather than conspiracy.
We made a mistake with the front page of our first edition, and we fixed it for the second edition, said the statement released on Twitter.

It was the lead story in all media through the day - it's ridiculous to call it a 'mistake'. They would have had to make a conscious decision to keep it off the front page.

incompetence; and that it was not giving customers their money's worth.

(14,737 posts)8. How long before South Yorkshire Police get a total overhaul?
We've also had the whole issue of what happened during the Miners Strike, plus the Rotherham child sex abuse scandal. South Yorkshire Police have had far more than their fair share of scandals.

(2,025 posts)9. It's definitely broken. This guy should be prosecuted for hate speech.
Hillsborough families have expressed anger after retired South Yorkshire police officers were told to be proud of their work, despite the inquests' conclusions.
A message on a website for the force's retired officers said they had served dedicated and courageous careers.
The message on the website of the South Yorkshire branch of the National Association of Retired Police Officers (Narpo) was made public by accident.
The comments were later removed, and Narpo's South Yorkshire secretary Rick Naylor said they had not been intended for public consumption and were not designed to offend.

Looks like they've learned nothing.
