I'm using windows XP. Guess I gotta buy a new computer. Which one?
My laptop is 5 or 6 years old.
I 'think' I want a touch screen laptop?
With windows 8.1 or whatever?
I use my computer for email, web surfing, and word processing.
Of course I want it to be 'fast'.
Not into gaming.
Like to keep it under $500.
Suggestions?
Thanks.

(41,694 posts)touchscreens are fine if you want to clean the screen of fingerprints every ten minutes. And you certainly don't want to word process with a touchscreen keyboard.
If you can find one with Windows 7 on it go for it.

I understand the windows 8 was developed for touch-screen?
As Hobbit noted, you don't have to upgrade, but I understand the desire to do so.

(11,862 posts)has 8...and I have to download a shell that mimics 7 cause I DO.NOT.LIKE.APPS for all my computing...
My newest is a dell 16" laptop with bare minimum...no microsoft etc, but I bought the home/student version of MS Office 2010...cause I do not like the 2013 version for $85 bucks
I bought a tablet touch screen and after a day ALL I see are fingerprints...I think they should ship fingertip covers with each touchscreen!

(255 posts)My MacBook was to the point I couldn't update the OS to the latest so it was time to upgrade the machine. I wanted to go back to Windows so I bought a Dell Inspiron 7000 series laptop. Wife wanted a Sony Flip to replace her aging XP laptop. Both are touch screen. So far so good. She loves her "tablet/laptop". I seldom touch the screen so as to avoid fingerprints. We both changed the settings to boot into the desktop instead of the start menu screen. Neither of us likes the start menu. I've pinned my most used programs (apps) to the task bar like the MacBook has. The goal is to eliminate having to use the start menu (tile screen) as much as possible. We're pretty close now. So far I have no regrets. Sure miss the onboard email client though.
