Mozilla Introduces Firefox 29 the "Most Customizable Ever" with an "Elegant New Design" ("quotes" mine)
https://blog.mozilla.org/blog/2014/04/29/mozilla-introduces-the-most-customizable-firefox-ever-with-an-elegant-new-design/
We reimagined and redesigned Firefox to reflect how you use the Web today and we are excited to introduce many features including an elegant and fun design, new menu, customization mode and an enhanced Firefox Sync service powered by Firefox Accounts.
Whats New in Firefox:
Elegant New Design: Sleek new tabs and an overall modern look that makes it easier to experience the Web the way you want.
Customization Mode: Makes it easy for you to personalize your Web experience to access the features you use the most. You can easily drag and drop your favorite feature, tool or add-on in the menu or toolbar.
Firefox Menu: Includes popular browser controls, features and add-ons in one place to make it easier and faster to access them. The menu is completely customizable so you can edit or add features you use most.
Fun and Simple Bookmarks: You can create bookmarks with a single click and manage them from the same place.
Easy Access to Add-ons Manager: Firefox includes an Add-ons Manager you can access directly from the menu to help easily discover and install add-ons.
Enhanced Firefox Sync Powered by Firefox Accounts: Just create a Firefox Account and our sync feature makes it even easier to setup and add multiple devices with end-to-end encryption. Firefox Sync gives you access to Awesome Bar history, saved passwords, bookmarks, open tabs and form data across your computers and mobile Android devices.

I kinda like/dislike it. I don't like "tabs on top" (a-la-Chrome) & also don't like that it automatically updated all of my Synced devices: this goes against one of my core principals -- I don't let ANYTHING auto-update EVER ...I installed 29.0 in my Win 7 Test Virtual Machine to see how it looked/felt and imagine my surprise when I fired up FireCHROME ...oopsie..,. Firefox on my host it had auto-magically updated to 29.
For those of you/us that don't want/like it you can always go back to previous versions or there's this addon:

(9,314 posts)that's the first thing I would have been looking for. You kindly saved me the trouble.

(9,314 posts)I used the addon Earth Bound Misfit linked to because I like the tabs on the bottom.
It does seem faster.
The only thing I don't like so far is by using the tabs on bottom addon the area where my icons are goes transparent. But, that's a minor thing. For me, it's always about speed and stability.
Just found something I don't like. There's no icon to open the bookmarks sidebar. The history icon doesn't open the sidebar.
Okay - I don't like it. What the heck, Firefox? If I wanted to use Chrome I would use Chrome.

(3,554 posts)Click the Bookmarks button (I moved mine to the left on the Bookmarks Toolbar, by default it's on the right) select view bookmarks sidebar:
I agree, bookmarks management is FUBAR IMHO.
>>>If I wanted to use Chrome I would use Chrome<<<
Ditto.

(9,314 posts)but why? Why do we have to go through another step? History does the same thing. Blah
Firefox has grown increasingly annoying with unnecessary changes.
When I put the tabs on bottom, the toolbar becomes transparent and the icons are hard to see. What the hell?
I'm pretty annoyed and considered reinstalling Firefox 28 but that's a hassle and isn't a good idea security wise.

(3,554 posts)& Flash seems to play nicer with this version. That being said, as you pointed out earlier if I wanted a browser that looked like Chrome, I'd run Chrome.
Trashed the new GUI and installed the Add-on I mentioned in the OP & got the best of both worlds-- My old UI & the new version's ability to further customize it. Classic Theme Restorer (Customize Australis) 1.1.8
Me happy now.

(22,671 posts)Agree 100%. But FF programming seems to be working backwards since v28+
I use Australis and set my tabs back to standard (on bottom) where I can use them and menus on top where I can use them. No thank you Mozilla!

(3,554 posts)The "New Sync" s@#ks gorilla balls. Despite checking to sync all preferences - "they" didn't - I have to redo all my customizations on ALL devices (6)... I shudder to think what "they" have done to my about:config tweaks.
If I didn't hate Google's snooping so much & dislike Opera's (non) support to import FFox bookmarks I'd switch to... well maybe not Chrome but definitely Opera - the OLD Opera - NOT the current version.

(8,543 posts)You can export your FireFox bookmarks as an HTML file and then import that into Opera's Bookmarks Manager extension.
I still don't know what they were thinking when they removed the bookmark functionality from the new Opera, but that extension brings most of it back. I don't really bookmark a lot of stuff, so it works fine for me - you'll have to see how it works out if you have a lot of bookmarks sorted in numerous folders.
I haven't upgraded to FireFox 29 yet, every other upgrade seems to break or disable some feature I'm using - so I tend to wait a little while to see what people are complaining about and if Mozilla decides to address it or not. They seem to be going down the path of the Presto Opera - I loved that around version 8 or 9 and then every upgrade seemed to break some feature that I really liked.
Maybe I just need to learn to make my own extensions - then I can probably get some browser to do what I want.
