I did, and then, I had TextEnhance on this site, I couldn't see the DU Homepage, Latest threads, or Greatest Threads pages, just the tabs. I had that Eziriz nonsense pop up on my computer. I had to do a system restore.

2. Stopped at version 28, that is the one before tabs and other BS

Be sure to turn-off auto-update

1) Tool (in command bar)

2) Options (7th down from the top)

3) Update Tab, select the 3rd from the top button: never check for updates (Security Risk)

It's got the tabs. Love them. Got it set up just how I want it and us old farts don't like change, you know. They're gonna have to pry that from my cold dead hands

Version 31 is the one to avoid.

6. Firefox 31 works find for me

Windows 8.1 and Firefox 31 works fine. I visited a few TextEnance sites and then came back to DU. No probs.

What operating system are you running? Have you tried testing your Firefox plugins to see if there's a conflict?

I do recommend against automatic updates, though. I usually wait a week before a major browser, program, or OS update to make sure it isn't borked before I install.

on both our laptops (running Windows XP).

I'd run a full malware check on your system using Malwarebytes, and possibly HijackThis (System Restore may have taken care of it anyway, but it's a blunt instrument in this case) - the timing may be coincidental, and TextEnhance may well have gotten onto your system some other way than via the update.
