How do I get rid of this problem?

I use Firefox as my browser. Recently, when I shut down my browser, I find a full page behind it promising to update my Windows 7. I'm pretty certain this is one of those sites that locks up your computer and then offers it free it for a low, low price. I've updated my virus protection several times, but it keeps turning up. Any idea how to keep it from popping up?

...doesn't matter which one, but higher-floor window is most effective;

2. Toss computer through said window;

3. Wait for sound of crashing impact. Problem eliminated.

I knew there was something out there that would help, but had completely forgotten about anti-malware programs.

I also shouldn't e-mail when I'm tired. I asked my department computer guru for a good (company approved) malware program. He's a good guy. He sent me an anti-malware program.

Thanks again for a answering my basic question with good advice and good humor.
