I fired up my computer this morning and saw a white window in the icons on the right side taskbar.

It wants me to reserve Windows 10. I have a year to decide.
What is so great about Windows 10, over Win 7 and why is MS pushing it?
After Windows 8, I am quite leary of anything new MS is pushing, "learned lessons" on their part or not.
What have they decided I don't need this time, that I normally used, such as the custom Menu bar I could set-up on the right side of the screen? I had to replace it with a folder of icons on the desktop. Pinning to the Start menu has a different function for me.
From what I can tell, the desktop defaults to the Win8 play skool look (from pictures on Google). Icons work just fine.

I just am not seeing much on what and why Win10 is so much better than Win 7. Even finding information dated within the last few days, lacks this comparison/information. Why should I "up-grade"? Or even think about it?

EDIT to add:
What does Windows 10 have, that Windows 7 doesn't, that would make me even think of up-grading?
What have they taken away from Win 10, that was useful on Win 7, or even XP? We all know they do that, regardless of the uproar their users raise.

Most people don't need the newest and latest version of anything for what they do.

I know someone with an ancient laptop with Win 95 on it. It does what she uses it for-namely word processing and she'll us it until either it or she dies. She has a newer computer for other other things but when she wants to write and update chapters in her book she uses the old machine

5. XP and previous are no longer supported by Windows, so they're fine so long

9. Activated one just a month ago.

Had to do the phone activation but it worked.
There's a crack for WGA if nothing else.

8. I used about a dozen of 200+ updates for XP

Never had a problem. Most problems are ID ten T errors.
I turn off Remote Access on my computers, don't use Internet ExploDer, stay away from Outhouse Distress, and especially pay attention to my security software before clicking or installing.
I go to risky sites a lot, especially the hacker/cracker sites so that I can keep up with they're up to. But I never ignore a warning from my security software.

2. You shouldn't, except that...

eventually, Win7 will lose support, just like XP has, so might as well get used to it sooner rather than later. Besides, from 8 on the idea is to be able to use touchscreens since we seem to be moving to tablets. I have a Win8 tablet that works seamlessly with the other computers just fine and I don't have to deal with Android, Apple, Kindle, Nook, or other systems.

Having used 8.1 for a year or so, I have to say it's a major improvement in stability and usability over 7 once you configure it properly and get rid of the crapware and bloat PC manufacturers insist on sticking in there. FWIW, I once bought an MS Win95 disc for a clean install and that computer worked amazingly better than the other ones with the "improvements" leaving me to believe most complaints aren't about the OS as much as the toolbars, help systems, games, security, and other stuff added on.

No operating system will satisfy everyone all the time, so we have to understand compromise, too. I have dual boot on one laptop with 7 and Ubuntu, and I switch back and forth for a reason. Both have good points and bad, and I'm looking forward to upgrading the Win half to 10.

7. I reserved mine this morning

figure by the time its out this computer will be about 5 years old and I can try it out before my next build. The thing I have to find more about are touch screens. I would not mind it on a laptop but I just got a new LG 34 inch monitor for the beauty of the screen, I don't want something with finger prints all over it.

I just followed this, and it worked for me. Don't know if you have to remove updates in listed order, but I did anyway. Saved restart until all packages were removed. Ran updater after restart, and blocked the packages I had just removed.
