Another Windows 10 "upgrade" aggravation.

Friend brought his kid's computer in because on boot up it kept saying "No OS found"
OK, get out my Windows 7 install disk and see if I can repair it. Only OS it finds is 10. Fixed it to the point that 10 starts to boot and halts due to file error. Starts repair process and goes into a loop.
Get out my Linux disk to see if I can read the drive and save data. Shows C: drive but not D: partition. Try to access C: drive and get unmountable error.
Get out a spare drive and do a quick and dirty 7 install, shut it down, hook up the other drive. Shows C: partition and lets me copy data files to external. When click on D: message is "This drive is not formatted, would you like to format it now?"
Evidently it upgraded to 10 back in Dec and blanked out the D: partition at the time. WTF? Needless to say everything on it is now gone.
Wiped drive completely and reinstalled 7, currently updating and making sure KB3035583 does not get there.

Windows should not have any control over that drive when booting off the Linux disk. Did you check and make sure secure boot was off in the bios?

That's how I was able to save the data to an external drive.
Crystal dsik info, spin-rite and Seagate drive test passed the drive just fine.

now that I got 7 back on it, both C and D are there without a problem.

3. Two friends of mine

have each lost everything on their laptops after upgrading from Windows 7 to 10. They both had to start from scratch. I had no problem with it myself, but I'm using a desktop, not a laptop. Something about upgrading a laptop is pretty iffy, it would seem.

13. Those are the horror stores that worry me about upgrading my computer to Windows 10

My computer means a lot to me. Thankfully I have external drives to back up everything before I switch over. I've been putting it off switching for a long time.

8. I'm using 10 on a laptop and I'm actually liking it better than...

8.1 I found that once I took over management it worked fine....10 likes to think what you plan on doing. It took 2 trys to get it to load up from Wins 7, it too found some error and fixed it. I never lost any files.

10. Win 10 is much better than 8.X IMO

but it's not my rock-solid stable-reliable Windows 7, not by a long shot IMHO. 10 is still buggy - an unofficial Public BETA - and I'll wait till the next big update, "Redstone" which was supposed to RTM this summer but has been delayed till spring '17 last I heard.

9. Just a heads-up re:KB3035583 (GWX)

...currently updating and making sure KB3035583 does not get there.

M$ revised this KB for the umpteenth time May 25th, now re-classified as "recommended"
If you have clients you've previously advised to hide & stopped this Malware like KB from installing, you/they'll have to hide it again. July 29th (end of M$ free upgrade program) can't come soon enough IMO.

11. Yep. Found another little trick they pulled a couple of weeks ago.

A MSE update turned Windows Update back to full Automatic. Up pops that Win 10 update screen within 30 seconds of the MSE update finishing.

12. Confirmed. That's why I uninstalled MSE on my 3 machs and switched back to Avast Free

MSE defs update thru Windoze Update and you're right when the version changes it fucks w your settings

Avast, Web & File shields only no useless Bells & Whistles, Defs & Prog update set to "Manual", no "streaming" updates. Aside from an odd false positive or three from the web shield it never makes a peep other than the occasional nag popup to upgrade to the $$$ version.
