"international" or "multi region" (yay Amazon) and they seem to play everything. I will admit, I haven't played a DVD lately, maybe they're putting more coding on the DVDs themselves? I also don't bother with BLU RAY.

I may not be getting the full "experience" but I just don't care that much!

It's beginning to sound, as has been suggested, that there is a copyright issue for which your player does not have the proper coding.

8. Actually there are three dvds that don't play. Two of them I've watched before on other dvd players.

I know first hand that some people have no idea what dirt and scratches on a CD/DVD do to the playability of their collection.
A scratch in the wrong place can make then unplayable.

Another poster above I think had it right you need a multi region DVD player to play some DVDs

as part of their DRM copy protection. This could be the problem.
