ASUS bf53 (or something like that) loud noise then crashes

I am pretty sure its the fan that has died and causing the laptop to overheat.

The hdd is OK as I removed that and used an external usb case to copy the files I need.

It seems that a new fan is rated at $60 for the part.

Youtube videos show a massive teardown just to replace the fan.

Any recommendations for a repair place / cost etc

The laptop is 6 years old but worked well till now.

I cant see you getting that fan replaced by anyone good at it for less than $100 in labor. So minimum you are looking at $160 to fix a machine that who knows what will go next on. Certainly less than a new machine and if it was a high end machine in the first place repairing it might be worth it but with the age of it I would think hard before opting to repair it. You can pick up a decent new laptop for somewhere in the $450 range and a referb if you are willing to go that route for $350 ish for a nice machine.
