hdmi cable-pc to tv - display settings

all the instructions I read (and watched on youtube) say to go to display and pick the "2nd greyed out monitor and adjust settings accordingly.... I only have one monitor choice. I can't choose any other monitor display. There's usually 2 labeled "1" and "2"..... I have a simple hdmi to hdmi hookup but can't change display settings. Okay, I am repeating myself. help?

I have windows 7
Samsung monitor
HP pc

thanks

Is there only the HDMI connector or is there also a DVI or VGA connector (did you use the computer with a monitor before, if so what connector was it
plugged into) ?

What display settings are you trying to change ?

Does anything display on the TV ?

One final question do you know the exact model of your HP pc ?

See if it works if the TV is on and tuned to the proper HDMI input, as well.
