Buying our own modem to use with Comcast - issues with throttling?

I suspect they do that if you use your own modem.

They even mention it when you ask about this. "We can't guarantee speeds" etc

Reading some reviews it does seem some people do have drop out etc thought that could be caused by other issues.

I'm changing from a "business" rip off deal to a normal residential internet "deal". After much discussion on the phone with them - and they drop the catch that I have to give them 60 days notice - read the fine print folks.

Even though when I signed up I was told that if I cancelled the charges would be pro rated.

Another long phone call is due perhaps? Is it worth the time? $268 per month after creeping up from the original $228 two years ago.

I am so tired of dealing with these rip off merchants but there is no real option where we are (outside city limits and dish internet sucks).

Maybe 5G might be an option.

4. I've set up dozens of Comcast accounts and have seen no issues with throttling due to modem type.

The biggest problem Comcast has is their plant (i.e., their wiring along the poles or elsewhere outside.) Many nodes get overloaded, causing large areas to have throughput problems. Increasing the capacity of these nodes can take many months due to the construction required and their accompanying permits. One area where I live has been suffering from this for years, so we switched that location to a fiber circuit from the phone company, but few locations have this option which leaves the inferior DSL as the only option.

Any wireless options that may be available where you live, including 5G, will never be able to provide the performance of a wired circuit like cable, fiber or even DSL.

6. Good Lord, $268 a month? That would pay for our internet, satellite TV, cell phones, electric, gas..

... water, & sewer & I'd still have money left over. That seems like a crazy price.

7. We had to battle them just to get any internet.

They claimed they could no connect over 200 feet to our house.

Its 190 feet - used laser measuring tool to check their claim. Should have been simple and fast to install normal net cables.

They insisted we had to pretend to be a business - a home office they said.

Then they insisted on putting in a telegraph pole. 6 guys digging into rock with hand tools. I had to lend them my jackhammer.

This all took 3 months to finally install a modem.

We had to sign a 2 year contract.

We had no choice as we need fast internet. Dish based net was slow and really expensive for extra Gbs

Despite their "guarantee" about speeds we still had drop outs and freezes.

They are a despicable rip off company.

8. I'd rather deal with AT&T than Comcast...

...and that's not saying much.



My wife's parents live in a rural area but they are fortunate to be roughly line-of-sight of an AT&T cell phone tower, unlike many of their neighbors who must suffer satellite internet, if they have internet at all. My wife's parents get both their internet and phone service through AT&T's tower. The old phone lines in the area are not even good enough for reliable dial-up service.

My wife and I have an inexpensive DSL connection and $8.99 a month Netflix. That's pretty much all I'm comfortable paying for that stuff.

Comcast would have to pay me to do business with them. We cut our cable a long time ago.

The price you stated is ridiculously high, is that just for internet or a bundle? I am paying $40.00 a month for Internet at 93 mps and $20.00 a month for my LG phone. I do not use the phone for data, only wifi for games and updates. I do not text at all. My Dad pays $14.68 a month for Antenna service and $20.00 for his non-data use LG! We are under $100.00 per month for TV, Internet,and two cell phones! I think you need to tighten your belt with them.

11. Uh oh, I just bought a 3.1 Netgear modem/router combo C7800, $300

and have not installed it yet because I dont have a good phone signal so activating is a problem...

I was going to get it going though soon, if this was the case I would be furious...if they throttled...I have not heard that from anyone else but who knows with them.

Someone here in this thread says no, not true...hopefully that person is right.
