Is there anything I can do to log on to Amazon if I don't have a smart phone?????????

Last edited Sun Jan 31, 2021, 03:05 PM - Edit history (2)

So we're in Maine at our vacation place. I try to log on to Amazon and they want to send me a message to my cell. Fine. I'm used to that. Just get the code and enter it. But NO.... NOW they send me a URL that I'm supposed to "tap" to approve or acknowledge the message. I don't have smart phone. I don't WANT a smart phone. The logon page advises me to contact Customer Service if I'm having problems. But I can't contact customer service until I log on!!! And round and round and round. I know for sure I'm not the only stupid-phone user who travels away from home. What the hell are they thinking??????? Is there anything I can do?????

A couple of replies point out that I should be able to specify a different method. That's true. But not today. I looked and looked.

Edit: I followed the advice of typing the URL into a browser page on my computer. That worked. I think part of the problem may have been that I cleared my cache a couple of days ago (to try to clean up things to re-try a damn Massachusetts COVID signup (!!!!!) ), so it looked like I was logging in from a different computer as well as a different location.

TIA
LAS

There should be an option for "use other method" on the login page RainCaster Jan 2021 #1

I don't have a smart phone either, and my flip phone doesn't even get text messages, but when I need it there is usually a choice of a URL, a text message, or a voice call from a computer.

You must have SOME computer with internet to be able to log on, right?

On THAT computer, type in the URL they gave you that you received on your phone.

It's often easier to have someone else hold the phone and read it to you as you type

Just want to say that I have always had good results when calling Amazon in the past.

Don't know how it is right now but it's always an option and one I would try if needed.

Then they stopped doing it. Good thing, because I don't have a smart phone either.

I assumed it was a temporary screwup and they were deluged by complaints from good, righteous, worthy people like us who don't have a smart phone and they fixed it.

What a pain if they're doing it again.

Not Amazon specific, but places online: used to be they'd ask for an email address to send a security code. Ok fine. Then they wanted a backup email. Ok, fine. Then they wanted answers to five security questions. Fine. Now they ask for a phone. I don't want to give out my cell number just so I can get more spam! If I am using their service via the computer and I can type in all kinds of security answers, why do I need to give them access to my phone? I resent it.
