what the heck is .heic format?

twice now I have received what is either an image or a video with a .heic .

I know it's an Apple thing. Do I have to use a converter to look at it?

It's the photo format used by newer iPhones instead of .jpg. If it won't open automatically, you can download apps that will open a .heic photo and convert it to .jpg.
