Google Drive question

Hi All!
I have google drive primarily as a backup of a ton of pictures my husband and I have taken over the years. We have the photos stored on a 1TB removable hard drive, but also use Google Drive as a backup to the backup, as well as for documents that we'd like to access at work or on another computer away from home.

From our mac we access Google Drive via the web, but on our Dell, we have a folder on the desk-top that we move and update docs, folders, and pictures from.

However, the number of pictures we have is taking up too much hard drive space on our computer, and I was wondering if I even needed the desktop app at all?

(Sorry, I'm not computer savvy so don't necessarily know all the right terms to use)

Right now, everything that is on my google drive desktop app is taking up space on my hard drive.

Do I need that google drive desktop app at all, or can I just upload/download any files I have or want to add to Google Drive from the website, allowing space to free up on my dell hard-drive>

Thanks for any help!

...and I have never had problems accessing my files, backing them up from GDrive via a browser (although it takes forever,) or sharing files.

helpfully,
Bright

it took forever to upload via the app, and I don't plan on having any major uploads in the future, just want for cloud-based backup and use on the computers without eating 90% of the hard drive on my aging computer

thanks!
