1. The partition is on the crashed drive. You're probably SOL on that but.

you can download a Windows .iso from Microsoft for your version of Windows, burn to DVD, and install on a new drive using the product key on the sticker. Then you'll have to download the drivers from HP for your model and OS.

That model would actually work better running Linux than Windows.

2. I put a new drive in and tried to boot with an usb cd/dvd, but it will not boot anything without

their special partitions. I changed the boot order. I also tried a dos floppy on a usb reader, nothing boots.

3. That is somewhere in the BIOS settings.

Look in all the settings, there's one somewhere that lets you boot from other OS. Ever since they went to the UEFI BIOS, the bastards try to lock out any other OS from booting to set it up.

seems that the UEFI is looking for old HD before even going to the BIOS. HP does have a factoryrecovery kit for 41$, I think it comes on a flash drive. I'm going to call them Monday and talk to tech support before ordering. Thanks.
