All of a sudden I've lost video audio. Both external speaker and internal laptop audio.

Video plays fine, but no sound. Realtek is my audio program (I think), ASUS laptop. I've made no changes, audio just stopped working. Any ideas?

1. Try restarting

the computer.

2. Tried that, no go. Oddly the Windows "jingle" sounds on a restart, but nothing else after that.

5. if that doesn't work

Try reloading the audio drivers.
Depending on the computer, it should work. I know it has in about 80% of the cases that I have tried it.
You may have to go to the laptop vendor's website, and look for the specific drivers for your specific operating system, but they are there.

3. Which version of Windows are you running?

If XP/Win7 right click the speaker icon and choose to open the Volume Mixer and make sure that nothing is muted.

If this only Youtube they have changed something in the last few days where they default to muted volume and you have to move the slider on each video to raise the volume.

4. I have this same problem starting yesterday, just with Youtube.

I have noticed that on the Youtube controls, there is an "x" beside the speaker icon. That "x" cannot be removed. At least I am not able to make that happen. It is not the volume on my computer, it is only the sound on Youtube.

I'm wondering if an addon/extension is causing the problem.

In firefox if I even hover over the speaker icon with the "X" in the youtube player, the volume slider appears immediately to the right of the "x". I can either click the speaker icon to unmute or drag the slider over to the right to increase volume.

You can't click the speaker icon and the slider doesn't appear either?

8. I am using IE, but you are right, the slider appears.

I was trying to make the "x" disappear by clicking (and clicking and clicking), but yes, when I did use the slider, the "x" disappeared and I did get audio.

It's been bugging me the past few days. From what I can tell today it stays set at the new volume as you go from video to video. Maybe it only defaults back to mute after clearing cookies or cache? I just tested IE and after clearing cache and cookies it did revert back to muted--so it may be just a once a day thing to set your volume depending on how often you clear personal data.

I saw someone suggest that it could be in response to office workers who get blasted with sound from videos at work. I don't know it that is true but is the only reasonable explanation for such an annoyance.

7. If you mouse over the X'ed out speaker icon a volume control should appear to the right of it.

You should be able to click on that volume control (or grab the vertical bar and slide to the right) to turn up the volume to an acceptable level.

I kept trying to get rid of the "x", but it did disappear when I moved the volume control up. I just kept thinking that I had to get rid of the "x" before anything would work.
