Maybe someone can help me ...
I have Microsoft 8.0 (hating it).
I'm trying to get to the Store to download an anti-virus. Whenever I click on Store, the screen just flips back to the Start screen.
What gives?

(21,024 posts)MS Security Essentials is more effective and less intrusive than most anti-virals. And who has a better handle on Windows viruses than Microsoft?

(42,755 posts)Be sure to uninstall any other A/V software you have running before installing it.

(9,314 posts)but just looking at some info on the Internet, it sounds like you are moving your mouse and it's going back to the start screen. You can lock the screen.
Maybe this will help: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/features#personalize=startscreen

(41,694 posts)If you try to install MSE you will get a message telling you it has Defender.

(31,849 posts)That is exactly what happened. Does that mean I'm good on the anti-virus thing?

(41,694 posts)If you get tired of the Windows 8 Charms bar and other crap get Classic Shell and install it. It will make it look and feel like Windows 7.

(31,849 posts)but I can't get to my "Store" ... well, I click on it from the "Start" page and it displays a green "Store" page ... for about a second, then it flips back to the "Start" page.
Any claim what's happening?

(27,509 posts)so you can check that everything is enabled:

The article also points out:
After reviewing the layers of technologies used by Microsoft to protect Windows 8, it is our opinion that it is the most secure version of Microsoft Windows to date. That does not, however, mean that it is invulnerable to all threats: if there is one thing we have seen time and time again it is that those who create malware adapt it to take advantage of technologies as they come into the mainstream, Goretsky said.
<snip>
The very interesting fact is that Windows Defender is automatically disabled once you install a third-party security app on your Windows 8 machine. As you can see in the screenshot, we deployed ESETs NOD32 antivirus and Windows Defender was switched off entirely.
Malwarebytes pro isn't an antivirus program, so it won't disable Windows Defender, it runs in parallel with Windows Defender or whichever antivirus program you use, to catch stuff that gets past the antivirus program.

(12,471 posts)There are plenty of free antivirus programs out there that do it better than MSE. MSE has one of the lowest detection rates on the market.
While you are at it, get malwarebytes FIRST, update it, and run a full scan, BEFORE you get an alternative antivirus.
