Ok, what should I do?

I think my 2011 MBP is reaching the end of its life. It's continuing to have problems and I'm thinking of getting something new.

I'm considering several options. I'm curious what you all would go with?

1. Depends on how you use it.

I voted Mini because I use it for graphics and to process photos. I love the compact computer with the big screen. If you don't do either of those things, then the Air is great.

I have a 2009 17-inch MBP. It was starting to choke about two years ago.

I put a $500 SSD into it and it keeps up with everything, runs as fast as a new machine.

The same drive is now $303 including an external enclosure for the old drive.

I have both a MacBook Air and Mac Mini and I love them both. I had used MacBook and PowerBook Pros for a long time and wasn't sure I could deal with the smaller screens, but the light weight, low power consumption and quick starting (no hard drives to spin up) have made me a a diehard MacBook Air fan. I use my Mac Mini connected to two large displays to do graphic work and it's tied down to several external drives. If you don't need external displays or external drives, go with the MacBooK Air (13inch). If you do plan to hang a lot of stuff off of it and you need a little more horsepower, go for the mini. Consider the server version which gives you two hard drives. You loose the internal CD/DVD but I simply use a fairly cheap external CD/DVD burner for both my MacBook Air and my mini. I have found that I rarely use the CD/DVD except to archive data.

Also, a three year old MacBook shouldn't be giving you problems. I've purchased many Mac laptops over the years and only one ever stopped working (after being dropped on a tile floor). What kind of problems are you experiencing? I've found that regular use of good disk maintenance tools such as TechTool or Disk Warrior along with Apple's own Disk Utility have solved most of the problems I've ever had on my computers.

4. I love my MBP, but if I were traveling a lot, I would opt for the air.

It's seems to be exactly the right size if it is to be transported frequently.

5. In a perfect world, a MacBook Air with Retina. Ah, dreams!

That computer doesn't exist. I have had all manner of Mac except for a Mini. I love my 13" Air. It is 100% functional and great to use. If it had Retina, it would be the perfect machine. It is, however, still the best Mac out there.

My work machine is a dual head, eight core MacPro. My Air is my "always with me" machine.
