LaCie 1T usb 3.0 portable external hard drive

Never had an external hard and bought the above for my Mavericks era loaded MacBook Pro
The LaCie is made for windows or macs

Do I have to format it be clicking "erase " or by clicking "partition" ? And I take it I don't turn on time machine until it is formatted ?
Honestly the only thing I really want time machine to back up are my Logic music projects and my mail and photos. I hope I have given you enough information for guidance. Thanks
