1. I'm sure there are lots of suggestions...and I have 3 Macs...

...I use MacScan (https://www.securemac.com) and Malwarebytes.

I'm not sure anything is perfect. MacScan is a subscription, and there is a free version of Malwarebytes.

2. Can't remember when I've used anything but MalWareBytes -- it does the job, and it's free.

Of course, you can upgrade to the full version if you want, and you might want that if your problems are coming in the mail.

Regarding mail:

1. if your email is iCloud, call Applecare immediately
2. if your email is not iCloud, then I suggest iCloud.
3. Ask someone to set up alias (extra email address) in iCloud for email subscriptions.
4. Use your main email only for important stuff.
5. I suggest an email alias for friends and family.

So, consult a skilled Mac user in your family or local store. Get a written plan.

Regarding software to protect against hacks, my information is out of date. Therefore , I defer to others.

now I'm terribly nervous about my Mac and two iPads. I'll call my e-mail provider and see if they can help me. Thanks for this info.

I know it's panned by some computer users, but it covers our entire network. both tvs, 2 computers, and both iPhones. I run a scan fairly often to make sure we are secure. It does cost because we have more than 5 devices. I also have Malwarebytes but it may be redundant.

Your email provider might not be as thorough as I prefer.

La Crosse is actually across the River from me, I'm actually in Dakota, MN, small town, so La Crosse would be the biggest city.

Just hate the idea of changing it and letting everyone know the new one. Pain in the arse. Ugh......

I get it everywhere. As long as you don't open anything, you're safe. My apple email account does a better job of resisting than gmail does, but it still comes through. "Date Russian Women" etc.
