as the other Apple computers like the Macbook. They didn't go a different way; they are still made and sold by Apple. https://www.apple.com/mac/

the built-in CD player/burner slot like previous top of the line Macs. But you can buy those single purpose ancillary appliances and plug them into their usb outlets.

Imacs are all-in-one, computer and monitor. Keyboard and mouse included.

Mini's and new Apple Studio (like a mini on steroids) Just the computer in the box. Add monitor, keyboard, mouse.
Apple sells a 5K new display and an LG 4K display. Check specs to use other monitors.

MacBooks of all sorts are complete. Processor, display, keyboard and trackpad.

All have basically identical processors and operating systems. You wouldn't notice any difference switching between them. (from experience!)

With all of these, just be careful about ports (USB, USB-C, HDMI and so on) Also, camera cards, and DVD or existing peripherals might need an adapter. This is especially important if you want multiple displays. Just ask one of their "geniuses" first. Connections do vary, but the trend towards "fewer connections" reversed when their lead designer, who wanted everything minimal and paper-thin, left the company.
