Software is a race with the devil. The devil usually wins.

Announcement yesterday. Pixelmator Photo is going entirely to a subscription model.
From "owning" software to renting it, a la Adobe.

I wanted a decent photo editor for the iPad that wasn't a subscription.
Bought it less than a week before the big change.

Guess that uses up a bunch of my accumulated luck/karma.

Why Pixelmator Photo is switching to subscription pricing
TL;DR: Pixelmator Photo will now cost $4.99 per month, $23.99 per year, but existing paid users get unlimited access for free.

8 reasons

Now, I have a theory of excuses.
If you give me ONE excuse, I give it some consideration.
IF YOU GIVE ME 8 OR MORE EXCUSES, I CALL BULLSHIT.

Just a rip off, like all subscriptions that don't involve a continuing service.

I use the desktop version, which is different. Very capable, about $50, with discounts once or twice a year. Takes some study.

People wonder why I love free and open source software.
Rarely does it make the trip to iOS.

If I had to write an app of personal interest to me for iPad, I'd write a web-based app on a desktop computer or laptop and access it via a browser on the iPad. There are quite a few great open source apps (like Moodle) that install easily via XAMPP, which gathers all the necessary pieces in one package. (Apache, MySQL. php and so on)

Been there, done that!
