But I got A+ certified in the dark ages, a couple of decades ago maybe. I don't even remember if it was hardware, software, or both. And then I turned around and stopped working with Windows and went Linux and never looked back.

The problem with THAT much experience, though, is it probably means you're on the upside of middle age, like me, which is a real job offer killer.

I just wanted to make sure I can find some extra revenue stream from somewhere.

I also work with Linux too, but more of a hardware/software support now - one of my contracts is a job I love - working with a non-profit home.

to MSCE 2000, I dropped Window's work as well. I am strictly Linux/Unix, front & back-end web dev, and security.

I know I don't stand a chance pushing 50 of getting into a corporate position, but if I can build a small consulting business I will be happy. I have been self-employed as it is for almost 25 years now anyway.

Alone, it is not enough, however, it is a solid foundation. Test out of more depending upon what work you have done and what work you want to do. I hold all of the professional, a few specialities I recently successfully passed, and am working towards the advanced security cert right now.

IT work has been a side gig for me but I am leaving my professional practice to start an IT consulting business and music studio in the coming years.

Good luck! It is rough out there.

The market depends on where; I've been a sysadmin most of my adult life and there have always been more jobs than people to do them in DC and Boston.
