The Hill: Kucinich to challenge fellow Ohio Dem

Kucinich to challenge fellow Ohio Dem
By Cameron Joseph - 12/28/11 11:24 AM ET

Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio) will run against fellow Democratic Rep. Marcy Kaptur next year.

He will file the paperwork on Wednesday afternoon, he announced.

The two were thrown into one district in the redistricting process during which Ohio lost two House seats. The new district contains an area encompassing Kucinich's Cleveland base and Kaptur's Toledo base.

After publicly shopping for a district in Washington state and mulling a challenge to Rep. Marcia Fudge (D-Ohio), Kucinich decided enough of his base was intact to mount a primary challenge against the longtime congresswoman.

The new district has more of Kaptur's territory. She is the longest serving female in the House.

They should make a deal. We have so few progressives in Congress and this could make it difficult to get either of them elected. If nothing else, this is a waste of progressive energy to say nothing of money. Surely one of them could run for a different office.

They are both so good.

I always vote, but one time two good candidates -- two of my friends were competing for an office. I was very busy, but more than anything, I did not want to vote because it would mean voting against one or the other of them. So I stayed home.

It was a good thing that I didn't vote because each of them called me after the election to ask whether I had voted for them.

It's an awful feeling -- to have to choose between two good candidates both of whom would do a great job. It can cause people to sit out the election.
