Takes me back to the days of studying, studying to take the test. I was 18 so I just missed being automatically a citizen when my parents naturalized. My dad and I were so worried about my mother though we knew how good at test-taking she is. Our anxiety was high. The officious tester-guy was so cold to me and dad and super warm to mom. I passed by the skin of my teeth, I think it was 75, though I'd been here since 3rd grade. My dad got 80-something. My mome got 100%. Officious tester-guy gave dad and I one of the smuggest looks I've ever received 
and we deserved it.
I just thought it was nothing but paperwork and a bother from time out of life. The day of the ceremony, the room was packed and every single body in there cried so hard. People hugging each other who didn't even know one another. It's one of the unexpected happiest days of my life.
I don't remember receiving one of those letters from Pres. Carter. Maybe I did. I'll have to check with mom.

Your celebration, so sweet. Crying for the joy of your citizenship. Me. Yes a naturalized citizen. Yet many relatives came through Ellis Island. My sister knows our history far better than me. I have done some research and saw the manifests when my grandfather came to America from Switzerland.
Obamas letter, a gift of welcome and the beauty of being part of our family, this nation. Kind of Blue, he has helped to heal wounds. It ain't over.
Yet as we move forward we become more beautifully diverse.

My dad and his buddies came over first in '64 on a cargo ship. Goodness, I forget the name of it even though we found out it was decommissioned some years ago, and we celebrated that ship. Ths captain, I'm certain a Swedish man but definitely Scandanavian, was so kind to those young men. My dad spoke very, very warmly of him, especially calling them out on deck to look at Ellis Island, that once upon a time they'd have to go through there like millions others who embarked on the same journey.
Yeah, it ain't over with fresh wounds always popping up but I'm so glad we've had a fantastic president who can convey the deepest sentiments so eloquently. It means a whole lot to me.
