A pioneering black driver on the old AAA "big car" circuit, when southern Indiana was a lot like southern Alabama - One of his contemporaries said "If you did'nt like Joe Ray, you just did'nt like people!"

And I think, for some folks, the fact that he is damm good at the job of "President'n" makes them hate him all the more.
