4 Year Old Serves As Mayor Of Minnesota Town

Dorset, MN (WCCO) -- Would you let your 4-year-old run a city or a town?

In Dorset, MN, it's a 4-year-old who calls the shots. That's right, you'll answer to little Robert Tufts who goes by Bobbie, the Mayor of Dorset, MN.

Every year the town picks a name out of a hat, and that person becomes the mayor for a year. From the looks of it, Tufts enjoys his job. He likes to play, dance, sing, and talk to his townspeople, but he also likes to sneak off to the lake with his parents in his downtime and fish.

There's an upcoming Ice-Cold 2013 Fishing Opener in Park Rapids, and Mayor Tufts has plenty of advice to give. He likes to catch plenty of crappie, muskies, and bass. He says the best bait to use leeches and worms.

I guess "mayor" is basically a ceremonial title in that town. surrealAmerican May 2013 #2

Still, I kind of like the idea of choosing leaders by random drawing. It sure saves money on campaigning.

Supporters of the mayor in the tiny tourist town of Dorset can stuff the ballot box all they want as he seeks re-election. The mayor — a short guy — is known for his fondness of ice cream and fishing. And he's got the county's top law enforcement official in his pocket.

Say hello to Mayor Robert "Bobby" Tufts. He's 4 years old and not even in school yet.

Bobby was only 3 when he won election last year as mayor of Dorset. Dorset, which bills itself as the Restaurant Capital of the World, has no formal city government.

Every year the town draws a name during its Taste of Dorset Festival, and the winner gets to be mayor. Anyone can vote as many times as they like — for $1 a vote — at any of the ballot boxes in stores around town. Bobby is running for a second term, and he gets to draw the winning name Aug. 4, so it's possible he could draw his own name.
