EDMONTON - For Brian LaBelle, local youth worker, occasional NDP candidate, and comic book fan, it started as a joke, at the expense of the overblown rhetoric in the overheated downtown arena debate.
Late last week, LaBelle launched a online petition, mirroring the extravagant language of the arena-boosters, suggesting his own modest proposal for downtown renewal: a 1,000-foot-tall statue of the Marvel superhero, Wolverine.
(For context, 1,000 feet is roughly 300 metres, making the statue shorter than the Empire State Building but more than twice as tall as our Epcor Tower.)
It is important to build this statue because in order for Edmonton to be considered a world-class city, we NEED a statue similar to the Eiffel Tower in Paris and the Statue of Liberty in New York City. Wolverine is arguably the most famous Albertan around the world and this statue would be a major boon for tourism in the city, LaBelle posted at www.change.org.
It is also important because it is what is commonly referred to as a catalyst project, meaning it will spur greater growth on the downtown of Albertas capital city and create numerous spinoff projects in much the same way that the X-Men comic book spun off dozens of other successful books.
