Cardboard and Paper Prom Dress

Cardboard Prom Dress Is Just The Right Fit For This Young Woman
by Mark Memmott, NPR

Why did Missouri teen Maura Pozek make her prom dress out of cardboard and paper bags?

Because after fashioning the previous two years' outfits out of Doritos bags and soda can tabs, "I had to top myself somehow."
Maura Pozek in her latest creation.
Steve Pozek (her dad)

Seventeen-year-old Pozek, a high school senior from Reeds Spring (just northwest of Branson), told NPR's Melissa Block this afternoon that it took "lots of hot glue" and some late-night last-minute alterations to make the dress work. Her original idea to construct it all of corrugated cardboard wasn't going well. With just hours to go, she made the skirt from paper bags. The top remained cardboard. All of it was painted.

the kids make tuxes and dresses from the stuff. The winners get some decent money, too!

I liked the one made from soda pull tabs, too--that is one talented young woman!

Check out the slide show at the link. It shows all three of her prom dresses, including can-tab dress and Dorito bag dress. Very cool.

I actually was embarrassed by some of the girls that we were around while taking pictures pre-prom.

8. Project Runway anyone?

Every season, usually the 1st challenge, is to make something fashionable out of decidedly non-fashionable stuff. I bet I can find pics...

Once they had to get their materials from the grocery store. (a dress made of corn husks won)

Once from stuff in their hotel rooms (one contestant made a beautiful dress out of coffee filters)

Once from the Hershey's candy shop on Times Square

Once from an automotive supply place (amazing stuff! a coat made from weaving together seat belts, the winner was of leather seat covers)

Once from the city recycle depository

Once from a flower shop

and so on.

I hate reality TV... except for Project Runway. Everyone.... even the 1st to be eliminated, comes up with amazing stuff. It's NEVER about destroying someone, like so many other Reality contests are at the start of their seasons.
